Empowered Employment: Vocational Skills Development Group
About
This service is designed to provide autistic teens, ages 15 to 18, with the vocational skills needed to prepare for independent living and employment. The program integrates Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to support values-based decision-making, self-advocacy, and resilience in the workplace.
Participants will engage in structured, hands-on activities to build skills in:
- Job readiness and work habits, including resume and cover letter writing, mock interviews, professional
communication, and time management
- Workplace social and problem-solving skills, such as responding to criticism, handling conflicts, and asking for help
- Hands-on work simulations, including organizing materials, customer service interactions, and following multistep work instructions
- Values-based goal setting to identify personal strengths and interests that guide career choices
- Stress and anxiety management through mindfulness and cognitive flexibility to handle work-related challenges
- Perspective-taking and self-advocacy, learning how to communicate needs effectively with supervisors and
coworkers
Through experiential learning, guided discussions, and community engagement, participants will develop
the confidence, adaptability, and skills needed for internships, volunteer work, and paid employment.
